Bringing Hydrogen Education to 1,600 Children Across Wales

Between October 2023 and March 2025 Marubeni Europower Limited, in collaboration with Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions Limited, has run school workshops at 50 schools in South Wales, engaging with more than 1,600 children, teaching them how green hydrogen can be used as a renewable energy source.  This groundbreaking program seeks to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards while supporting Wales’ transition to a low-carbon future.

Recent Workshop Success

On March 31st, 2025, the partnership delivered 4 engaging workshops to Year 7 students at a secondary school in Bridgend as part of their Year 7 STEM Day, marking another successful milestone in their educational outreach program. The sessions provided students with hands-on experience in renewable energy concepts, focusing specifically on hydrogen as a clean energy carrier.

“The workshops are designed to be both educational and interactive,” explained a Marubeni Europower representative. We want young people to not just understand renewable energy theoretically, but to experience its potential firsthand.”

Practical Learning Experience

During these immersive workshops, students have the opportunity to assemble mini electrolysers, witnessing firsthand how hydrogen can be produced through the electrolysis of water using solar power. The experience extends beyond classroom learning, with participants getting the chance to ride on a “Hydrogen Bike” and sit inside a hydrogen-powered vehicle, bringing the technology to life.

Teachers have consistently rated the workshops as excellent, describing the workshops as “active and engaging”, with one teacher commenting that “The workshop gave a very child friendly, informative approach to educating the next generation about sustainability in Wales.”

Commitment to Wales’ Green Future

Marubeni Europower has demonstrated a firm commitment to reducing carbon emissions across Wales. The company recognizes that educating the next generation about renewable energy, including its benefits and production processes, is crucial for long-term environmental sustainability.

As part of this commitment, Marubeni is working with Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions to deliver hydrogen bus services to major events such as the Swansea Airshow in 2024 and the Senior Open atRoyal Porthcawl golf course in 2023, showcasing practical applications of the technology they’re teaching in classrooms. They are excited to also be running hydrogen bus services to major events in South Wales again in 2025 demonstrating how hydrogen can improve the sustainability of transporting passengers to prestigious venues such as Royal Porthcawl.

Career Pathways in Renewable Energy

An important aspect of the workshops involves introducing students to potential career opportunities in the renewable energy sector including the decarbonisation of major sporting events such as international golf tournaments.  Representatives from Marubeni and Hyppo, discussed the academic subjects and skills needed to pursue careers in this growing field of sustainability, helping young people envision their potential role in the green economy of tomorrow.

“We’re not just teaching about technology; we’re opening doors to future careers,” said Tanya Foxall, Hyppo’s Business Manager. “These students could be the engineers, scientists, and policy makers who complete Wales’ transition to clean energy.”

Looking Forward

The Marubeni and Hyppo partnership represents an ambitious renewable energy education initiative in Wales. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience, the program aims to create a generation of young people equipped with the understanding and enthusiasm needed to embrace and advance hydrogen technology.
